Prometeo es una figura propulsora de acontecimientos, por ello está asociada a la creación, al desarrollo de la técnica [
τέχνη], al progreso, y es considerado como el forjador del intelecto humano; es un personaje que impone un hemistiquio en la sucesión del tiempo divino, puesto que, concentrado siempre en su individualidad, es el rebelde autócrata entre los titanes y los dioses. La filantropía de Prometeo hizo que se condoliera del funesto destino que Zeus tenía preparado para la raza de los efímeros mortales, y les entregó un don preciado para éstos: el fuego, el cual simboliza la "superación", pero también la pena y el estigma, quizás heredado del Titán, de enorgullecernos vanamente de tal don y hacer mal uso de él, hasta el punto que, en pro de la ciencia [τέχνη
], seamos capaces de deshumanizarnos y llevar a la decadencia y al posible exterminio nuestra especie, la cual está condenada a perecer en la fatalidad de ese fuego prometeico. El presente artículo, es un esbozo de un proyecto mucho más amplio, sin embargo, aquí ofrecemos un pequeño recorrido por el mito de Prometeo, abarcando un sucinto perfil del mismo, donde rastreamos sus posibles orígenes y las fuentes más representativas, además, analizamos sus motivos principales y diversos mitologemas que encierra, concluyendo con una reflexión a la que nos induce este mito el cual nos hace un llamado de alerta y nos exhorta a tomar cartas en el asunto del rumbo decadente, por la desenfrenadas ansías de conocimiento, que lleva nuestra civilización.
